Microsoft has announced that Xbox consoles will soon support external hard drives over 16TB in size. This new capability has been confirmed for Xbox Insiders as part of an ongoing system software update, which is currently rolling out to public testers in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring. As with previous updates, the feature will be gradually rolled out to larger testing groups before it becomes available to the public, likely within the next couple of weeks.
According to Microsoft, "We are enabling support for external USB drives larger than 16TB, so you can be sure your favorite games are always ready to play!" The newly formatted drives larger than 16TB will be partitioned to make full use of the available space for games and apps, and they will appear as multiple devices in the storage device list.
Interestingly, Microsoft has not specified a new upper limit for storage devices, which suggests that there may be no limit anymore, as drives larger than 16TB will now be partitioned for use. The question arises: how big of a hard drive can you connect?
Drives larger than 16TB that have already been formatted will not be impacted by this change. However, they will need to be reformatted in order to take advantage of the updated support for larger drives.
For more updates from Microsoft, tune in tomorrow, Thursday, January 22nd, for live coverage of the Xbox Developer Direct, starting at 6pm UK time. Expect to see more of titles like Doom: The Dark Ages, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, South of Midnight, and other exciting surprises.
